Meanwhile, a search warrant was obtained for Gacy’s house. Officers and evidence technicians—representatives of the Des Plaines police department, the Cook County sheriffs police, and the state’s attorney’s detail—began arriving at the brick ranch house about seven that night. They were looking for evidence of a kidnapping; they feared they might find evidence of a murder.

During the ensuing years, there has been speculation Gacy might have had more victims. The only possibility, he says, is one more body tossed from the Des Plaines River bridge. Police say Gacy would first promise them a "handcuff trick," convincing them to cuff themselves behind their backs. Then, he would proceed to a "rope trick," strangling them after they were cuffed and unable to resist. John Wayne Gacy, often called the “Killer Clown,” was one of the worst serial killers in U.S. history, murdering at least 33 teenage boys and young men. The murders, which occurred largely between 1972 and 1978, claimed the lives of 33 men and boys, with Gacy taking them to his ranch house in rural outskirts of Chicago, Illinois, before sexually assaulting, torturing and murdering them. Gacy is apprehended when seen handing a bag of marijuana to a gas station clerk, prompting another home search that reveals the first discovery of human remains. It didn’t seem possible that all these boys had just happened to leave their clothes, their jewelry, and their wallets at John Gacy’s house. By the end of his horrific spree, Gacy had killed 33 boys.

One he left alive was Robert Donnelly, a 19-year-old college student he abducted from a Chicago bus stop. After bringing him to his house, Gacy raped and tortured Donnelly, dunking his head repeatedly in a bathtub until he passed out and performing fake executions with a gun loaded with banks. Donnelly was in so much pain he begged Gacy to kill him, but Gacy let him go and warned him not to tell anybody. When officers investigated, Gacy said it was a consensual “sex slavery” encounter, and the police believed him, according to Buried Dreams.
